UH Hilo hosts Big Island Science Conference

The University of Hawaii at Hilo hosts the Big Island Science Conference August 13-15 at the University Classroom Building (UCB) Rooms 100 and 114. Registration is $10 for each of the three days, which includes an abstract of proceedings and refreshments. Each morning session starts at 8:30 a.m. The conference is sponsored by Sigma Xi, an international organization of invited scientists committed to improving science education. The public is invited to attend.

“The real purpose is to get people together to share information,” said Dr. Cedric Muir, a UH Hilo visiting assistant professor of natural sciences who is co-organizing the conference with Dr. Marta de Maintenon, an assistant professor of marine science at UH Hilo. “One of the things happening with this conference is getting students who are involved in research to present their research findings. It gives them valuable experience presenting a paper at a conference. There’s a lot of interesting and worthwhile research being done by our own students and I’m really looking forward to hearing some of the results.

“It’s a good thing to get researchers here on the Big Island exposed to each other’s work and to get an idea of the kind of scientific work that’s being done here,” he added.

The opening day of the conference is a special symposium titled “Pioneers of Big Island Science.” Conference presenters in the morning session include Dr. Don Hemmes on fungi, Ken Kaneshiro on picture wing drosophila, Dr. George Curtis on tsunamis, and Don Swanson on volcanology. Afternoon session presenters include Dr. Walt Steiger on astronomy, Larry Kimura on cultural practices on Mauna Kea, Bill Stormont on the contemporary societal role of Mauna Kea and Dr. Paul Coleman on the perspectives of a Hawaiian astronomer.

“These people are the pioneers in their fields and help to start the excitement in their fields here on the Big Island,” Muir said.
