Film series continues
The film series, Cinema from Africa and the Diaspora, continues on Thursday, October 9 with Quand Les Etoiles Recontrent La Mer (When the Stars Meet the Sea), beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the University of Hawaii at Hilo University Classroom Building 100. General admission is $3.00; there is no admission charge for UH Hilo/Hawai`i Community College students.
Directed by Raymond Rajaonarivelo, When the Stars Meet the Sea is one of the most magical cinematic experiences to come out of Africa. Set in the parched high mesa interior on the island of Madagascar, the film’s major characters dream of a return to the oceanic mother Rano Masina, or "sacred water.” The work incorporates the use of three recurring visual symbols: sky; sea; and by implication, the land marooned between them or life between birth and death to poetically explore the complex themes of exile and identity, love and hate.
The film is in French and Malagasy with English subtitles.
