Hale Kuamo`o receives three-year education grant

The University of Hawaii at Hilo Hale Kuamo`o program, through the University’s Ka Haka `Ula O Ke`elikolani College of Hawaiian Language, was recently awarded a three-year grant under the Education of Native Hawaiians Program. $778,291 was awarded through September 30, 2004 for the first year of the grant.

The award will be used toward the Hua Kau Maka Hawaiian Language Literacy Project, K-3, to develop early childhood literacy comprehension curriculum for Hawaiian medium education, helping students to achieve a high level of literacy in both the Hawaiian and English language.

“This grant will allow us to strengthen the foundation of our Hawaiian medium literacy program by working closely with teachers on-site and providing extended professional development and new curriculum and support materials for the Hawaiian immersion classroom,” said Hale Kuamo`o Program Director Keiki Kawai`ae`a.

The four major objectives of the grant are to create a large supply of student- and teacher-created stories and storybooks that are written in Hawaiian, to expand the pilot program of Foundations and Frameworks’ comprehension reading program at Ke Kula `O Nawahiokalani`opu`u-Iki Laboratory Public Charter Schools, to validate the newly created Hawaiian medium literacy curriculum model, He Aupuni Palapala, for all early childhood literacy curriculum development at Hale Kuamo`o, and to evaluate project activities and to create evaluations to monitor student achievement and outcomes.

To achieve these goals, Hale Kuamo`o will be working collaboratively with the Hawai`i State Department of Education, the `Aha Punana Leo, the Kamehameha Schools, and the founders and staff of About Learning and Foundations and Frameworks.

“We are so elated with this opportunity to work together with other organizations who are contributing their expertise and support to the project, and ultimately, to the success and achievement of Hawaiian immersion children across the state,” Kawai`ae`a said.
