UH Hilo seeks submissions for Diversity Symposium

The organizers of a University of Hawaii at Hilo symposium entitled, "Dialogue on Diversity: Sharing Research, Promoting Understanding, Discussing Issues," to be held on January 27, 2004 from 8am–5pm, invites representatives from Hawai`i County organizations and schools to submit presentations, performances, panels, or discussion topics for possible inclusion in the forthcoming event.

According to the 2000 census, Hawai`i County is the most ethnically diverse county in the United States. The symposium will attempt to provide a forum for community members, faculty, staff and students to discuss the opportunities and challenges diversity brings. Panel organizers are seeking speakers, works-in-progress, papers, publications, panels, creative works, essays, research, and performances for the symposium.

The keynote address will be given by Dr. Richard W. Brislin, UH Manoa management and industrial relations professor and international cross-cultural communication expert. Brislin has taught numerous courses in intercultural communication and organizational behavior and leadership, and is the author of Intercultural Interactions: A Practical Guide.

The symposium will also feature a presentation by special guest speaker Dr. Paul Pearsall, clinical/educational psychologist and UH Manoa adjunct clinical faculty professor. He will be accompanied by a hula dancer whose performance will exemplify and highlight some of the principle themes of his presentation. Pearsall is a world-renowned speaker, New York Times No. 1 best-selling author, and television personality. He has been designated as one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century by the Oxford University Biographical Society.

To be considered for presenting at the symposium, submit a brief description of topic, format, and equipment needed to Dr. Catherine Becker, associate professor of communication, UH Hilo, 200 W. Kawili Street, Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 by December 15, 2003. The committee will attempt to accommodate the schedule to preferred times, if indicated.

Symposium sponsors include the UH Hilo Office of Student Affairs, Department of Communication, Lambda Pi Eta (UH Hilo chapter of the National Communication Association’s Student Honors Society), Humanities Division, UH Hilo Diversity Committee and a UH Diversity and Equity Initiative grant.

Additional sponsors are still being solicited. For questions or comments, contact Becker at beckerc@hawaii.edu or (808) 974-7464.
