Taniguchi to receive UH Distinguished Alum Award

Barry K. Taniguchi, president and chief executive officer of KTA Super Stores, has been selected to receive a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Hawai‘i by the UH Alumni Association. Taniguchi, a Hilo native and resident, will be honored along with five other recipients at the 2004 Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner, to be held at the SheratonWaikiki Hotel in Honolulu on Thursday, May 20, at 5 p.m.
In addition to his business interests, Taniguchi, who earned a bachelor in business administration from UH Manoa in 1969, is a Big Island community leader and volunteer. A premier volunteer leader for UH Hilo and a former UH Foundation trustee, Taniguchi’s generosity of both time and money have supported UH and its students on a systemwide basis.
“Barry is one of the driving forces moving our community and our University in a positive direction,” UH Hilo Chancellor Rose Tseng said. “His dedication, both as a businessman and as a civic leader, to making Hilo an even better place to live and UH Hilo the best university possible, make him a truly distinguished alumni.
“I am excited to see Barry honored for his tireless and selfless community service.”
Taniguchi currently serves on the boards of Mauna Kea Management, Chancellor’s Advisory, Hawai‘i Community Foundation, Lyman Memorial Museum, Pacific Tsunami Museum, The Queen’s Health System, the Queen Emma Foundation, Hawai‘i Island Economic Development and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawai`i.
