Itinerary of Events for Students

Welcome to the UH Hilo Vulcan Family! Orientation is more than just advising and registering for classes. Orientation will give you the tools you need to survive the first week of school. The registration fee for new, transfer or returning students is $75, which is separate from other fees that you have paid for this semester. This fee covers most of the activities outlined in this itinerary (unless otherwise specified). Please stop by the orientation check-in tables on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at the Campus Center Plaza to pick up your survival packs before you go to the first session, "Good Morning UH Hilo" that starts at 9:00 am .

November 2, 2009 is the first day to sign-up online for orientation. December 16, 2009 is the last day to sign-up for orientation.
Once you have signed-up for orientation, there are NO REFUNDS. . Please note that the campus will be closed Monday, December 21, 2009 through Friday, January 1, 2010. Payments not received by Friday, December 18, 2009, will not be processed or posted until the week of January 4, 2010. For more information regarding campus closures, please go to: Campus Closures

Students wishing to review their itinerary, may do so by logging into the orientation website. Please make sure you remember your username and password that will be e-mailed to you so that you may log back in. Please call the New Student Programs Office should you have any questions: 808-933-0732.

Student Orientation Fee Waivers
Student Orientation Fee Waivers are for students who may need additional financial assistance. To be eligible, students will need to write a one-page essay describing why they think orientation will be beneficial for them. Essays are due by Monday, November 30,2009 and can be submitted via e-mail to uhhntrso@hawaii.edu. There are a limited number of waivers available. The essays will be reviewed and awardees will be chosen by a peer selection committee. For more information contact the New Student Programs Office at 808-933-0732.

This advising session may be conducted in a group setting. Advisors from your major will introduce you to your new major, go over requirements for your major and provide class selection advice. Each department may go over major requirements and other requirements you should be aware of in preparation for registration. Please be sure to have your TCE available.

Room locations will be listed on the advising sheet that will be included in your orientation packet that you will receive upon check-in.

Need help creating a well-balanced schedule? We're here to help! After meeting with your advisor, stop by the computer lab to register for classes! Registration is ongoing at MyUH Portal. For registration questions, visit the 2:00pm-4:30pm

Got juice? Yes! We have juice and fresh pastries to help you start the morning right! After grabbing your breakfast, all students who have registered for orientation can check-in at the Campus Center Plaza to pick up your UH Hilo Survival bags. You can check-in before or after the Good Morning UH Hilo session that begins at 9:00 am.

Faculty advisors are available to meet with you individually to discuss your schedule, the requirements for your major, or to answer those burning questions you have about your new major.

Whether it is a research paper you need to write, learning about the native Hawaiian culture in the special collections area, or even renting out videos or DVDs, you'll need to navigate the library to help achieve academic success. Take this personal guided tour with one of our friendly librarians. You'll never know when you'll need their help in the future! (This session repeats throughout the week if you are not able to make it at this time)

Enjoy a meal on your own or with the new friends you've met during orientation!

Don't get caught by loan sharks! Know your rights and responsibilities as a loan borrower under the Family Educational Loan Program, subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford Loan, Perkins Loan, State Higher Educational Loan, and parental loans. All students receiving loans must complete a Loan Entrance Interview.

Hawai'i, the Big Island, is a natural laboratory for exploration. What are the things you need to know before venturing out to local spots like Boiling Pots, South Point & Green Sands Beach, or even surfing the waves of Honoli’i Beach Park? This session will provide you with local tips that will help you discover and appreciate all the natural beauty that the Big Island is known for and to become aware of the dangers behind the beauty.

Celebrate the progression of your journey through UH Hilo as the traditional Hawaiians have always done, with food and fun under the stars! Your payment & registration to this exclusive event includes entrance into a traditional Hawaiian Lū'au(feast), along with an exciting local performance provided by Hula Halau Kou Lima Nani E. Mahalo to Student Activities Council for bringing Hula Halau Kou Lima Nani E to this special event. Aloha attire and comfortable shoes recommended! Space is limited - first come, first served.

Dare to be in the water while watching the movie, Jaws? It's like the old school drive-inn movies - but in the water! Enjoy watching Jaws under the moonlight and in the coolness of the Student Life Center pool! Popcorn and light refreshments to be provided!

Attend this workshop to learn about your rights and responsibilities as a student with a disability, and learn successful strategies as a new student. Empower yourself and be strong like the Koa tree on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Gain a clearer understanding of yourself in your path towards academic success at UH Hilo.

This session is for those that need more personalized attention with a faculty advisor to discuss schedules for Spring 2010, transfer courses, academic goals, career aspirations and to learn about educational opportunities within the major. (This session does not take the entire time, but is merely designed for you to "drop-in" based on your schedule)

Grab your lunch and meet with your orientation group where you can reconnect with your peers and your orientation leaders to talk about the week and what events you don't want to miss out on!

Join select faculty in this interactive session where develop strategies on how to best engage with your professors in and outside of the classroom, learn faculty expectations beyond the syllabus & understand how your actions in and outside the classroom can impact their lives.

Explore your options for global experiences! Whether you want to study, work, intern, or volunteer abroad, a variety of programs can fit your goals. Discover how you can get credit in your major or minor, and learn about resources that can help you plan to go abroad or on exchange. Attend this session and begin your journey.

Interested in getting involved in student life? Interested in becoming a future leader at UH Hilo? Meet the leaders from the organizations funded by your mandatory student fees. Find out how to get involved. It's a great way to become a UH Hilo Vulcan!

Need some things for your new home at UH Hilo? Need new clothes? Looking for a part-time job? Want to find out what Prince Kuhio Plaza has to offer you? Come to Orientation Week's favorite event for fun, food, discounts, prizes, and a FREE movie pass (passes are for first 100 students who sign up)! Your oreintation fee includes this event. Those not staying for a movie, shuttles will be available to return to campus beginning at 7:00 pm.

Want to know where you can go for a really good cup of local coffee? Want to enjoy live entertainment? Kope Kope is a favorite place for treats and entertainment! Shuttles will begin check-in and boarding at 6:00 pm. Your orientation fee includes this event!
