Welcome to UH Hilo’s Web site.

UH Hilo's mele (song), Pulelo Ha‘aheo, inspires us to "E ku a‘e e Hilo, lei i ka na‘auao; Ho‘okahi ka umauma, ho‘okahi pu‘uwai," which means, "Rise up, O Hilo, wear proudly the mantle of enlightenment; Let us stand united in purpose, mind and heart." I think these words beautifully express the Aloha Spirit behind our primary mission: To offer excellent undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in an extraordinary natural and cultural environment.

At UH Hilo, you will enjoy smaller than average classes, close interaction with professors, hands-on learning, and the opportunity to experience the fascinating island of Hawai‘i as a learning laboratory. We have a richly diverse student population, with a unique blend of local, mainland and international students, all living and learning together in a harmonious and safe environment. Our campus is beautiful, with open spaces, tropical gardens, places to sit and soak up the sun or seek shelter from the Hilo rains—a peaceful, island paradise in which to live and study.

A degree from UH Hilo represents a comprehensive, liberal arts education. Students are encouraged to collaborate with their professors on research projects, many of which result in publication in leading journals, giving our graduates a great advantage in employment or graduate school. You will be well prepared to meet the challenges of a knowledge-based, global economy or further your education.

UH Hilo also offers a wide range of student life programs for intellectual enrichment, personal development, or just plain fun! Our students enjoy an exciting social life, with over 40 co-curricular clubs and organizations, dances, athletic events, cultural fairs, UH Hilo Performing Arts Center presentations, weekend excursions to explore our beautiful island, and many intramural and recreational sports. Counseling, tutoring, and career assistance are also offered to help you outside the classroom.
