Gail Shafer

I'm living in Pine Valley, CA, a little mountain town east of San Diego with my husband Ryan and my new little baby boy Bjorn. We are currently running a branch of an environmental consulting business from our home--Ryan is a senior geologist for GeoEnviro Services, and I work part time putting together the quarterly groundwater monitoring reports. But mostly I enjoy taking Bjorn out for hikes to explore the local geology. He loves it--I think we have a little geologist in the making!
From 2000 - 2007 I worked for Padre Associates Inc. and some interesting projects included the geotech for the construction of a 5-story subterranean parking structure, multiple landslide repairs, and ground support for contaminated soil cleanup of oil fields in Kuwait.
What I remember most about my years at UHH are geology field trips, late nights in the lab, the students and staff. My experiences in the Geology Department were challenging, rewarding, and fun. I'd recommend that any students planning to go to graduate school should do so straight out of college. Meanwhile, take advantage of the small class sizes and staff support at UHH!
