Toby Hewitt
After graduating from UHH, I attended grad school at the University of Montana; I graduated in 2004 with a Master of Science in Geology.
I am working in Wyoming at a uranium mine as a restoration engineer. My main duties are using ModFlow to model groundwater flow and contaminant transport of the orebodies that are out of production and in restoration. I work for Cameco Resources, and it is very challenging work. My wife Joan is working at the Laramie Mountain Humane Society, and my daughter Lexi is still doing gymnastics and loving school as usual. Photo above shows me with Lexi hiking in the Bighorn Mountains.
What I remember about UHH Geology is all the great Geology Club field trips that we took...Waipio Valley, Makalawena. I also have some great memories of going to a one-week field camp in the Poleta Folds geologic area near Bishop, California. I also really enjoyed the Pau Hanas, we really had some good times at those, and I doon't want to forget to mention the field trips to the lava flows for petrology lab!
I would highly recommend attending UHH and majoring in geology. The professors are excellent. They are there to help you along the way, and challenge you at the same time. I felt confident with my geologic knowledge, skills and abilities after graduating, which carried over into grad school and my professional career.
I would challenge the current students to take on extra projects, such as a NASA Space Grant Project. Participate in all the Geology Club events and field trips, ask the professors if they have any geology projects that they need help with, volunteer, go the extra mile.
